Purba Medinipur district lies in the south-eastern corner of West Bengal, on the coast of the Bay of Bengal. Tamluk is the district headquarters. The district is especially known across the state for three things: Digha's sea beach, the historic town of Tamluk and Haldia's large industrial belt. Just 3-4 hours from Kolkata, it is one of Bengalis' first choices for a weekend trip.
Built in the basins of the Rupnarayan, Haldi and Rasulpur rivers, this district advances through a combination of agriculture, fish farming and industry. Purba Medinipur was formed in 2002 when the undivided Medinipur district was split. The history of the "Kartik Hatiyar" in the freedom struggle and of the Tamluk Jatiya Sarkar (national government) is the pride of this region. In the medieval period Tamluk was a famous seaport and one of the centres of Sri Chaitanya's preaching.
Cultivation of rice, jute, watermelon and vegetables is the main agricultural livelihood. Fish farming and fishing are notable in the Contai and Potashpur regions. In the Haldia industrial belt, thermal power, petrochemicals and port-based industries provide employment to thousands of people. The Digha-Mandarmani tourism economy is a growing pillar.
