What is a Claim Settlement Ratio (CSR)?
CSR is the percentage of total claims filed against an insurer in a financial year that were actually settled. Example: if 98 out of 100 claims are approved, the CSR is 98%. Before buying a policy, check the insurer's annual IRDAI report and make sure the CSR is above 95%.
What is the key difference between term insurance and life insurance?
Term insurance provides pure protection for a fixed period — you get nothing back at maturity, which is why the premium is very low. Endowment and money-back life insurance plans mix investment with protection, so premiums are much higher and the cover for the same premium is far smaller.
Should I hold more than one health insurance policy?
Yes — if possible, it is wise to keep a super top-up plan alongside your base policy. When a large claim exhausts the base policy's limit, the top-up covers the remaining costs. With multiple policies, a claim is shared between the insurers on a contribution basis.
Can I claim tax deductions on insurance premiums?
Life insurance premiums qualify for deductions under Section 80C of the Income Tax Act (Section 80D for health insurance), within the prescribed limits. However, most deductions are not available under the new tax regime — check which regime applies to you.
