Darjeeling Tea (Word & Logo) was the very first product in India to receive the GI tag recognition in 2004–05.
West Bengal currently has 28+ officially registered Geographical Indications across agriculture, handicrafts, handloom, and food items.
In 2024, West Bengal received GI tags for Sundarban Honey (Mouban), Kalo Nunia Rice, Tangail Saree, Korial Saree, Garad Saree, and Sarpuria of Krishnanagar.
GI tags are issued by the Geographical Indications Registry located in Chennai, under the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), Ministry of Commerce and Industry.
Banglar Rasogolla received its official GI tag certification in November 2017 under application number 579.
