Figures are approximate market rates and official norms · verified regularly · last verified: September 2026

West Bengal is India's second-largest potato producer and a leader in fish farming — yet most value addition and storage still leaves the state. To close this gap, the centre and the state now offer major capital subsidies under PMFME, MIDH and PMMSY — while accurate, numbers-first information in Bengali is almost non-existent.

The guide is organised into four sections — PMFME & food processing, micro cold storage, biofloc fish farming and, as the newest silo, agri-tech & drones. Each carries cost tables, the subsidy route, application steps and fraud warnings — all figures marked as approximate market rates and verified regularly.

Frequently asked questions

Which agri-business model is best for a small budget?

With a ₹1.5 lakh budget, biofloc fish farming is the most accessible — PMMSY covers up to 40% for general beneficiaries (60% for women/SC/ST) and a 2-tank unit fits in 3–4 katha of courtyard space. But it is a business of daily water-management discipline — do not start without training.

Do you receive subsidy money upfront?

No — both PMFME and PMMSY are credit-linked and the MIDH subsidy is back-ended. You set up the unit with a bank loan or your own funds first; the subsidy reaches your loan account or bank only after setup and verification. Do not trust anyone promising to "lock in" subsidy upfront.

Do these schemes need an "agent" or consultant?

No. Applications on the PMFME portal (pmfme.mofpi.gov.in) and PMMSY portal (pmmsy.dof.gov.in) are free; in PMFME, DPR preparation help through the District Resource Person is part of the scheme itself. Anyone demanding advance service charges or money into a personal UPI is not trustworthy.

Where is the biggest risk?

Cold storage: occupancy — without verifying local produce volume the tanks will not fill. Biofloc: water quality — rising ammonia kills fish overnight. PMFME: market linkage — a unit stalls without a sales channel after processing. Each guide carries a dedicated risk section.
