How to Check District Court Case Status & Judgments Online in West Bengal (eCourts)
Checking West Bengal district court case status, hearing dates, orders and judgments online with a CNR number on the eCourts portal and app — the complete step-by-step guide.
Introduction
West Bengal’s district courts (district and sessions judges, sub-divisional courts, subject-specific courts) have gone digital under the central eCourts project. Now a case’s next hearing date, issued orders and even final judgments can be viewed and downloaded from home — without even phoning the lawyer.
The CNR number — the case’s Aadhaar
Every case’s 16-digit CNR number works like an account number. It usually appears on the acknowledgement given when the case is filed. Save this number — on the eCourts portal, the app and the court counter alike, this is what identifies the case.
What eCourts Services shows
- Case Status: the case’s current stage and the next hearing date.
- Orders: interim orders (such as summons, injunctions, bail orders) — as PDFs.
- Judgments: final judgments.
- Cause List: the daily list of which cases are listed in which court on a given date.
Track Calcutta High Court cases separately
On appeal from a district court, the case moves to the Calcutta High Court (calcuttahighcourt.gov.in) — high court cases must be tracked through eCourts’ high court section or the high court’s own portal. As with court fee services, no agent is needed here either.
Beware of fraud
If anyone asks for money saying “I’ll get the case dismissed”, “I’ll pull the date forward”, “I’ll arrange a word with the judge” — that is fraud. Verify the court’s dates, orders and judgments online yourself — and keep your own lawyer for everything.

🪜 Step-by-step guide
- Find the CNR number
Every case has a 16-digit CNR (Case Number Record) — it appears on the papers from the first hearing or with your lawyer. With it, checking status is easiest.
- Open the eCourts Services portal or app
Go to the ecourts.gov.in portal or the 'eCourts Services' app on the Play Store. For district court cases, select 'District Court'.
- Search by CNR number or details
If you have the CNR number, search under the 'CNR Number' option. Otherwise search by district, court (chief judicial magistrate/additional judge etc.) and case number-year, or by party name.
- View status, orders and judgments
Opening a case shows Case Status (next hearing date), Orders (issued orders) and Judgments (final judgments) in separate tabs — PDFs can be downloaded.
❓ Frequently asked questions
Can a case's hearing date be seen online?
Yes, on eCourts Services the Case Status tab shows the 'Next Hearing Date', and it updates there when the date changes. Saving the case on the app also gets you notifications.
How do I find the case if the CNR number is lost?
Search by party name and district, or find out the case number-year at the filing counter of the concerned district court.
How do I get a certified copy of the court's judgment?
What you get online is a verification copy. For a certified copy for bank, registry or legal work, apply at the concerned court's registrar office with the prescribed fee.
