Kalimpong–Lava–Lolegaon: The Hills Beyond the Crowds

A little east of Darjeeling lies the Kalimpong district, steeped in the scent of orchids and pines — and its hidden villages of Lava and Lolegaon. Beyond the Teesta, this region is far from the highways, yet a paradise for nature lovers and birdwatchers. For those who want walks, birdsong and banks of cloud — without Darjeeling’s crowds — this route is West Bengal’s best offbeat choice.

Kalimpong town is itself a comfortable base — its architecture a blend of Bhutanese, Nepali and colonial styles, its street market full of local cheese and the scent of orchids. And a two-hour drive up the hill roads brings you to the stillness of Lava-Lolegaon.

How to Reach

  • By train: Kolkata to NJP station, then a shared jeep/cab across the Teesta to Kalimpong (about 75 km, 2.5–3 hours).
  • By air: The same road from Bagdogra airport; pre-paid cabs from the airport cost ₹2,500–3,500.
  • From Darjeeling: Jeeps run on the Darjeeling → Teesta Bazar → Kalimpong route (3 hours) — a good plan if you want to combine both hills in one trip.
  • Kalimpong → Lava: 32 km, about 1.5 hours by jeep; Lava → Lolegaon: 20 km, 1 hour. Shared jeeps are limited on this stretch — booking a whole car for 4–6 people is the practical option (₹2,500–3,500).
Route Time Cost (approx.)
Kolkata → NJP (train) 10–12 hours ₹350–₹1,200
NJP → Kalimpong (shared jeep) 2.5–3 hours ₹200–₹300
Kalimpong → Lava → Lolegaon (hired jeep) 2.5 hours ₹2,500–₹3,500 (per car)

Best Time to Visit

October to March is best — clear skies, views of Kanchenjunga and more birds. Flowers bloom in the forests in March–April. The monsoon (July–September) brings both fog and landslides — avoid it. In winter, night temperatures drop to 4–6°C; don’t go without good blankets.

Day-by-Day Plan (4 Days)

Day 1 — Kalimpong: Reach NJP in the morning and check in at Kalimpong. In the afternoon, Deolo Hill (the town’s highest point, with Kanchenjunga views and the Mangal Dham temple), the Durga temple and the old MacFarlane Church. In the evening, watch the sunset from Morgan House hill and buy cheese and chhurpi at the street market.

Day 2 — Orchids to Lava: In the morning, visit Kalimpong’s orchid nurseries and Zang Dhok Palri Phodang (an old Bhutanese fortress, now a heritage hotel — entry ticket required). After lunch, take a jeep to Lava. In the afternoon, see Lava Monastery and the village’s walking trails. At night, stay at a homestay — food off the hearth, stories by the fire.

Day 3 — Neora Trail and Lolegaon: At 5:30 am, take a guide for Lava’s Neora Valley nature trail — through misty oak-pine forest, listening for the calls of the rufous-necked hornbill. Rusty-bellied shortwing, golden throated barbet, and more can be spotted. Reach Lolegaon by noon and check in at a homestay; in the afternoon, the pine forest’s ‘Canopy Walk’ and the sunset point.

Day 4 — Rishop and Return: In the morning, if time allows, descend along the Rishi river (14 km from Lolegaon) — the river’s gurgle and the card bridge at the Nepal border. Leave at noon to reach NJP by evening and take the night train to Kolkata.

Where to Stay

  • Kalimpong town: Hotels for every budget (₹900–₹4,000/night); good restaurants serving Nepali-Bhutanese food.
  • Lava: WBTDC lodge and private homestays (₹1,000–1,800/person including meals). Guides and vehicles are arranged here.
  • Lolegaon: Almost entirely homestays — staying with local families, hearth-cooked meals, and a sea of clouds outside the window at dawn.
  • In season (October–January, the Puja holidays), homestays fill up — book by phone 15–20 days ahead; an advance is usually not required, but do confirm.

Food

Kalimpong has its own specialties — Kalimpong momos, thukpa, potatoes with gundruk seasoning, and the famous Kalimpong cheese and lollipop-cheese crackers. Lava-Lolegaon homestays serve simple rice, dal, vegetables and meat — if you want something special (chicken or local fish), ask a day ahead. Homestays can accommodate vegetarians too, but let them know in advance.

Birdwatching Guide

Over 200 bird species can be seen in the Lava-Lolegaon region. You would hardly spot them without a local guide — the two hours after dawn are the most rewarding. Keep the great hornbill, rufous-necked hornbill, scarlet minivet, blue-fronted redstart and black-faced warbler on your list. If you bring a camera, carry a long lens and a rain cover; avoid bright-coloured clothing in the forest and walk quietly.

Tips and Precautions

  • The Lava-Lolegaon roads are narrow and fog-prone — travel in daylight and hire an experienced local driver.
  • Mobile network is weak (Jio is comparatively better); carry cash — there are no ATMs.
  • Never walk in the forest without a guide — it is easy to get lost, and wildlife rules (this is red panda territory!) must be followed.
  • Carry plastic waste back out with you; drink boiled water at homestays.
  • In an emergency, call 112; the nearest good hospital is in Kalimpong town — arrange medicines in advance.

🪜 Step-by-step guide

  1. Plan your route

    NJP/Bagdogra → Kalimpong (2.5 hours) → Lava → Lolegaon → back. A one-way circuit saves road time.

  2. Arrange your stay

Homestays are best in Lava and Lolegaon — book by phone in advance; rooms are scarce in season.

  3. Explore Kalimpong town

Deolo Hill, Durga temple, Zang Dhok Palri Phodang, MacFarlane Church and the orchid nurseries.

  4. Forest walks and birdwatching

Walk the Neora Valley nature trail at Lava (part of Neora Valley National Park) and Lolegaon's pine forest with a guide.

  5. Add Rishop to the plan

If time allows, add a trip along the Rishi river up to the card checkpoint on the Nepal border.

For pine and oak forests, misty mornings, birdwatching and quiet, unhurried hill villages. They are the first choice for those wanting to escape Darjeeling's crowds.

How many days are needed to explore Kalimpong?

One day for Kalimpong town; 3–4 days for the full trip including Lava–Lolegaon.

How can I go there cheapest?

Train from Kolkata to NJP, then a shared jeep to Kalimpong (₹200–300). Shared jeeps are scarce on the Lava–Lolegaon stretch, so a group of 4–5 can book a whole vehicle and split the cost.
