Introduction

Two hill villages near Lava in Kalimpong — Kolakham and Rishop — make almost the same promise: wake up beside Neora Valley to Kanchenjunga. But when choosing between them, you need to know the differences — because the crowds, altitude and the kind of experience are entirely different.

Comparison at a Glance

Aspect Kolakham Rishop
Altitude About 2,100 metres About 2,590 metres
Relationship with nature At the entrance of Neora Valley National Park, forest-fringed On an open ridge line, a broad viewpoint
Kanchenjunga view Good (from rooftop/viewpoint) The biggest draw — wide and dramatic
Crowds Few — a quiet small village Quite bustling during holidays
Homestays Basic to good, fewer in number More options; book early
Connectivity Weak network Comparatively good

Choose Kolakham, If —

  • Your goal is walking the forest trails of Neora Valley and birdwatching — as the national park’s gateway, forest safari arrangements are easiest from here.
  • You want an uncrowded, tucked-away hill village — with only birdsong alongside your morning tea.
  • You are building a trip around the Lava-Lolegaon route (see our Kalimpong-Lava-Lolegaon guide).

Choose Rishop, If —

  • The main desire of the trip is a wide Kanchenjunga view up close — the whole range turns golden in the dawn light.
  • You are travelling with family and want more homestay options and comparatively good connectivity.
  • It is a popular route — so book at least a month ahead for peak season (Durga Puja, Christmas, spring holidays).

Getting There and Budget

A direct car from New Jalpaiguri (NJP) or Bagdogra takes 4–5 hours; via Kalimpong, take a bus/car up to Lava and a hired car from there. In both places, homestay-based packages (night’s stay + all meals) are available for ₹8,000–14,000 per couple — prices rise in peak season.

Entering Neora Valley requires a forest department permit and guide — the centre is at Lava; homestay owners usually have it arranged.

Practical Advice: Do Both

The distance is just 30–45 minutes; the best formula is 2 nights in one village + a day car trip to the other and Lava. A winter morning view at Rishop and an afternoon forest trail at Kolakham — this pairing fits in a single trip.

❓ Frequently asked questions

Can both Kolakham and Rishop be covered in one trip?

Yes — both villages are near Lava and 30–45 minutes apart by car. Many travellers stay 2 nights in Rishop or Kolakham and do Lava and the other village as a day trip.

Where is the Kanchenjunga view better?

Rishop is higher, so the view from its viewpoint is wider and more dramatic. Kolakham also offers views, but as it is surrounded by trees, they are somewhat framed — the view comes right from the homestay rooftop at dawn.

Which one has fewer tourists?

Kolakham — the village is small and tucked on the forest edge of Neora Valley. Rishop's main camp road stays nearly full during holiday weeks.
