Udyam Registration 2026: Complete Online MSME Registration Procedure for Free (with Aadhaar-PAN)
What Udyam registration is, how to do it online for free from home, what documents are needed, what the benefits are, and how to download and update the certificate — a step-by-step guide.
If you want to start your own business or grow a small one, Udyam registration — the Ministry of MSME’s free online registration — opens the doors to government loans, subsidies and tenders. Few documents, zero cost, ten minutes of your time.
What is Udyam registration?
Udyam is the government of India’s only official method of MSME (micro, small and medium enterprise) registration. Depending on your business’s investment and turnover, your unit falls into one of three classes:
| Class | Investment in plant & machinery | Turnover |
|---|---|---|
| Micro | Up to ₹2.5 crore | Up to ₹10 crore |
| Small | Up to ₹25 crore | Up to ₹100 crore |
| Medium | Up to ₹125 crore | Up to ₹500 crore |
The same limits apply to service-based businesses. Registration is one-time — as the business grows, the class updates automatically.
What you need
- The owner’s Aadhaar card — the proprietor’s in a sole proprietorship, the managing partner’s in a partnership, a director’s in a company
- PAN card — of the business/owner
- Aadhaar-linked mobile — for OTP
- Bank account number and IFSC
- Basic business information — name, address, activities
Remember: basic Udyam registration does not require a trade licence or GST. GST will be needed later if you cross the turnover threshold.
Step-by-step online registration
- Open udyamregistration.gov.in — fake sites appear in search results, so verify the address
- Click the ‘For New Entrepreneurs’ option and enter your Aadhaar number and name → verify the OTP
- Provide PAN, business name and type (proprietorship/partnership/HUF/company), address and bank details
- Choose your activities from the National Industrial Classification (NIC) code — multiple activities can be added
- Declare total investment and turnover — no documents are needed now; self-declaration suffices
- Enter the number of workers, commencement date and give final submission with OTP
The Udyam Registration Number is available as soon as you submit. Once PAN verification completes, download the certificate PDF from the Verify & Download page.
What benefits does the Udyam number bring?
- Priority-sector lending — easier approval for MUDRA and CGTMSE-guaranteed loans
- Gateway to subsidy schemes — PMEGP and state schemes like Karma Sathi/Bhabishyat Card ask for the registration number
- Tender preference — EMD exemption and reserved items for MSMEs in government tenders
- Payment protection — under the MSME Act, if a buyer delays beyond 45 days, payment with interest becomes mandatory
- Interest subvention on overdrafts and eligibility for patent fee rebates
What to do after registration
- Update/Confirm once a year (investment-turnover self-declaration) — otherwise the registration becomes ‘update pending’
- If the address, bank or activities change, use Update Profile on the portal — free
- If your account is hacked (the number or mobile is changed), file a complaint using the portal’s ‘Resend OTP / Complaint’ option
