Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
How long does it take to get a caste certificate?
If documents are complete, the certificate is usually issued within 30 to 60 days after verification. If community proof is weak, the local enquiry may take longer.
What if there is no family caste certificate?
If no old certificate of parents or blood relatives exists, the application is accepted based on the community certificate given at school admission, certificates from the gram pradhan / councillor, and local enquiry. If needed, first obtain a duplicate copy of a relative's certificate.
What should I do if my application is rejected?
Depending on the rejection reason, you can correct the documents and reapply, or submit a review application at the SDO / BDO office. The reason is mentioned on the Track Application page.
In detail
Introduction
Without a caste certificate, SC/ST/OBC candidates cannot access scholarships (OASIS, Aikyashree), reservation in government jobs, or college admission reservations. In West Bengal, this certificate is issued by the Backward Classes Welfare Department, and the application can be made entirely online.
What Each Class Requires
- SC (Scheduled Castes): Family community proof is the main requirement. No income limit.
- ST (Scheduled Tribes): Membership of a state-enlisted ST community must be proven.
- OBC (Other Backward Classes): Along with family community proof, a renewable income certificate is required every year — if the income limit is exceeded, the certificate becomes invalid.
Steps to Apply Online
The entire process takes place on the castcertificatewb.gov.in portal — registration, form filling, document upload, fee payment, and status tracking can all be done from home. After the application is submitted, the local administration (BDO/SDO) conducts an enquiry — they may contact you by phone or post at this stage, so keep the mobile number active.
Status Check and Complaint
Check the current status on the portal’s Track Application option using the application number. If it is stalled for a long time (60+ days), visit the relevant BDO/SDO office with the application number, or file a complaint through the department’s grievance channel.
