Important Notice & Official Warning

If your Aadhaar card is more than 10 years old, update your POI (Proof of Identity) and POA (Proof of Address) documents immediately, free of charge or for a minimal fee, as per government guidelines. Use the biometric lock/unlock feature to keep your Aadhaar secure.

Step-by-Step Walkthrough

Application & Verification Process

4 Steps
01

Log in to the myAadhaar portal

Go to UIDAI's official portal, myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in. Click the 'Login' button, enter your 12-digit Aadhaar number, fill in the captcha, and enter the OTP sent to your Aadhaar-linked mobile number to access the dashboard.

02

Select the update service (Update Aadhaar Online)

From the dashboard, select the 'Update Address' or 'Document Update (POI/POA)' option. Clearly identify the information you want to change (e.g., address, document upload).

03

Enter the new details and upload relevant valid documents

Type the new address correctly in both English and Bengali. Scan and upload the applicable supporting document from the approved list (such as a Panchayat Pradhan's certificate, electricity bill, or bank passbook).

04

Pay the online fee and save the Service Request Number (SRN)

Pay the prescribed government fee (₹50 for an online address update) online via UPI or debit card. After successful payment, an acknowledgement slip with a 14-digit SRN code appears on the screen, which you will need to track the status later.

Common Inquiries

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

4
Can the mobile number and biometrics (fingerprints and iris) be changed online?

No. For strict security, changing the mobile number, updating biometrics, and changing the photo require the applicant to visit the nearest Aadhaar Seva Kendra, post office, or designated bank in person.

How long does it take for an online address or document update to be approved?

Typically, after the document verification process, the information is updated in the Aadhaar database within 3 to 7 working days, and a confirmation is sent via SMS.

What are the rules and cost for ordering an Aadhaar PVC card?

Go to the 'Order Aadhaar PVC Card' option on the myAadhaar portal and pay the ₹50 government fee; the QR-code-enabled, waterproof plastic PVC card is delivered to your home address by Speed Post.

When does a child's Blue Aadhaar card biometrics need to be updated?

When the child turns 5, and again at 15 years of age, the child's biometrics (fingerprints and iris) must mandatorily be updated free of cost at the nearest Aadhaar centre (Mandatory Biometric Update - MBU).

Difference Between Aadhaar Online and Offline Services

To ensure maximum cybersecurity of the Aadhaar database, UIDAI allows some services to be completed online from home and reserves sensitive changes for offline centres:

Service Mode (Online / Offline) Required documents / conditions
Address Update Online (myAadhaar) / Offline Scanned copy of Proof of Address (POA) and mobile OTP
Document verification (POI / POA Update) Online (myAadhaar) Government identity document and a recent proof of residence
Adding a mobile number and email Offline only (Aadhaar centre) No documents needed; in-person biometric verification
Photo and biometric update Offline only (Aadhaar centre) In-person fingerprint, iris, and live photo capture
PVC card order (ATM size) Online (myAadhaar) Any active mobile number (even if not linked to Aadhaar)

Aadhaar Lock and Biometric Security Features

In today’s era of cyber fraud and SIM swapping, the Aadhaar card comes with strong security features:

  1. Biometric Locking: On the myAadhaar portal, you can lock your biometrics with a single click. This prevents anyone else from making fingerprint-based transactions without you. If needed, it can be unlocked instantly with an OTP.
  2. Masked Aadhaar: When booking a hotel, getting a SIM card, or showing ID anywhere, it is safer to use a masked Aadhaar in which the first 8 digits are hidden (e.g., XXXX-XXXX-1234).
  3. Virtual ID (VID): To protect privacy, you can generate a 16-digit temporary Virtual ID as an alternative to your 12-digit Aadhaar number.
