How can I get an Instant e-PAN within 10 minutes?

Go to the Income Tax e-Filing portal (incometax.gov.in), choose the 'Instant e-PAN' option, and enter your Aadhaar number and the Aadhaar-linked OTP — the digital e-PAN card arrives as a PDF, completely free, within 10 minutes.

After applying online for a regular PAN card, how long does the physical card take to arrive?

After successful online verification, the digital copy arrives by email within 3-4 working days, and the physical plastic PAN card reaches your specified address by Speed Post within 10 to 15 working days.

Do minors' PAN cards carry a photograph and signature?

A minor's PAN card has no photograph, and instead of a signature it says 'Minor'. After turning 18, you can later submit the 'PAN Correction / Update' form to add a new photograph and signature and obtain a full-fledged card.

How do I verify whether my Aadhaar card and PAN card are linked?

On the Income Tax portal, go to the 'Link Aadhaar Status' tab and enter your PAN number and Aadhaar number — the current link status is displayed directly on the screen.

The Importance and Uses of a PAN Card

The Permanent Account Number (PAN) is a 10-character alphanumeric identification code issued by the Indian Income Tax Department. It is essential for maintaining financial transparency and preventing tax evasion:

  • Opening a bank account: A primary requirement for opening savings and current accounts at any scheduled or rural bank.
  • Filing Income Tax Returns (ITR): PAN is mandatory for annual tax filing and claiming TDS refunds.
  • Financial transactions above ₹50,000: PAN applies to cash deposits and withdrawals at banks and to demand drafts.
  • Property and vehicle transactions: A mandatory identification document for registering immovable property and buying a four-wheeler.
