A Fixed Deposit (FD) is the most popular safe investment — you deposit a fixed amount once for a specific tenure and get the total back with compound interest. Enter the principal, rate, tenure and compounding frequency below to find out the maturity value.

How FD Calculation Works

FD interest grows on a compound basis: M = P × (1 + r/f)^(f×t) — where f is the number of compounding periods per year. Indian banks usually compound quarterly (f = 4), so that is the default.

A few important points:

  • The rate is locked in when you make the deposit — even if rates fall during the tenure, your FD’s rate does not change.
  • Senior citizens usually get 0.5%–0.75% extra interest — add it in the rate field before calculating.
  • If you withdraw before maturity, interest is paid at the penal rate.
  • A 5-year tax-saver FD qualifies for an 80C deduction, but it cannot be broken before maturity.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does interest grow on a bank FD?

In most Indian bank FDs, interest compounds quarterly. Some banks and NBFCs also offer monthly or annual compounding — choose the appropriate option from the calculator's frequency dropdown.

Is FD interest taxable?

Yes. The interest earned on an FD is taxable as income. If the annual interest from one bank exceeds ₹40,000 (₹50,000 for senior citizens), 10% TDS is deducted — and the 80C deduction on a 5-year tax-saver FD applies to the principal only.

What happens if I break an FD before maturity?

On premature withdrawal, banks usually deduct a penalty of 0.5%–1% and pay interest at the rate prevailing on that day. So when deciding the tenure, it is wise to consider when you might need the money.

How much extra interest do senior citizens get on FDs?

Most banks offer senior citizens (60+) an extra 0.50%–0.75% interest over the regular rate. To calculate the correct maturity value, simply add that extra rate in the rate field.
