Income Tax Calculation Rules (New Regime, FY 2026-27)
Calculation steps: ₹75 thousand standard deduction if salaried → tax as per slabs → waived under 87A rebate up to ₹12 lakh → marginal relief just above ₹12 lakh → 4% health and education cess.
A few important points:
- The new regime has no age-based slabs — the same slabs apply to everyone.
- Taxable income up to ₹12 lakh is tax-free under the 87A rebate (excluding special-rate income such as profits, LTCG).
- Surcharge applies on income above ₹2 crore — not accounted for in this calculator.
- Choosing the old regime allows 80C, HRA and home loan interest deductions, but the slabs are different and the rebate limit is ₹5 lakh.
Frequently Asked Questions
Up to what income is no tax payable under the new regime?
For salaried individuals, no income tax applies up to ₹7.75 lakh (₹12 lakh rebate limit + ₹75 thousand standard deduction), and for other income up to ₹12 lakh under the 87A rebate (FY 2026-27, new regime).
What are the new regime tax slabs?
₹0–4 lakh nil, 4–8 lakh 5%, 8–12 lakh 10%, 12–16 lakh 15%, 16–20 lakh 20%, 20–24 lakh 25% and above ₹24 lakh 30%. Additionally, 4% health and education cess is added.
What is marginal relief?
If taxable income slightly exceeds ₹12 lakh, losing the rebate could make the tax higher than the extra income earned — under marginal relief you never pay more tax than the excess income. The calculator computes exactly that.
New or old regime — which is better?
For most salaried individuals, tax is lower under the new regime, especially for those who claim fewer deductions like HRA or 80C. If you pay house rent or have large deductions, the old regime is sometimes better — it is good to calculate under both regimes and compare.
