For rural families in West Bengal, the NREGA job card is still the most important document — family members’ names appear on it, wages from government work are earned on its basis, and it is also required for verification in many other schemes. But by 2026 the story of this scheme itself has changed.

🔄 The biggest update (October 2026): The MGNREGA law has been repealed and replaced by the new VB-G RAM G Act, 2025 (Viksit Bharat – Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission (Gramin)). Implementation of the new law has begun in West Bengal, and the notified wage for FY 2026-27 in West Bengal is ₹300 a day — up from ₹260 the previous year. The good news: job card checks, payment status — everything still works on the same nrega.nic.in portal.

In short: To check your name on the job card, go to nrega.nic.in → Reports → State-wise Reports → West Bengal → Proceed → R1. Job Card/Employment Register → district → block → panchayat — no login required. Check wage payment status in Financial Reports → Statement of Payment to Workers using the job card number. For a new job card, take the Aadhaar card, photographs and bank passbook to the gram panchayat office — completely free, card within 15 days. In FY 2026-27 the daily wage in West Bengal is ₹300, with a work guarantee of 125 days a year (VB-G RAM G Act, 2025).

In this guide we will cover — how to check the name on the job card, where to see wage payment status, how to apply free for a new job card, what to do if wages are stuck, and exactly which rules have changed under the new law.

VB-G RAM G vs MGNREGA — What Has Changed? (At a Glance)

Aspect Before (MGNREGA) Now (VB-G RAM G, 2025)
Work guarantee 100 days a year / household 125 days a year / household
Daily wage (West Bengal) ₹260 (FY 2025-26) ₹300 (FY 2026-27)
Unemployment allowance Existed Retained
Centre-state cost sharing Centre bore almost the entire wage cost New sharing structure (~60:40), the states’ burden has grown
Job card and portal nrega.nic.in Same portal (new look rolling out gradually)
Focus Right to employment Employment + water conservation and sustainable rural assets

One thing is important in the West Bengal context: since 2021, with the Centre’s NREGA funds held back from the state, activity had been low for a long time. With implementation restarting in the state under the new law, job card verification and new applications matter far more now than before. The West Bengal budget has also made a large allocation for the scheme.

What Is a Job Card and Why Does It Matter So Much?

An NREGA / VB-G RAM G job card is a government document issued by the gram panchayat carrying the names, photographs and a unique job card number of all adult (18+) members of a household. Why it is needed:

  • Entry ticket to work: Without this card you cannot be counted on for scheme work.
  • Record of wages: Days worked, wages and payments are recorded against the job card number.
  • Proof for other schemes: Job cards are often checked to verify rural households’ income status.
  • Free and for life: There is no cost to make the card or renew it year after year.

Check the Name on the Job Card List (Step by Step)

The entire process can be done online, without login, from a phone. Here is the path:

  1. Open nrega.nic.in in your browser (the home page carries links to all reports).
  2. From the menu, choose Reports → State-wise Reports.
  3. Select West Bengal from the state list and click Proceed.
  4. From the list of reports, click R1. Job Card/Employment Register.
  5. Now drill down through your district → block → gram panchayat.
  6. The panchayat’s full list of job cards will open — search with (Ctrl+F) by name, or match the family’s job card number.

💡 Tip: In the list, the job card number appears as a link. Clicking it opens the complete history of all members on that card — names, days worked and payments. If your name is missing or misspelled, inform the panchayat immediately.

Check the Wage Payment Status

To know whether the money arrived after you worked:

  1. nrega.nic.in → go to Reports.
  2. From there choose Financial Reports / Statement of Payment to Workers.
  3. Select West Bengal → district → block → panchayat.
  4. Search the payment records by your job card number / name — you will see how much money went to the bank for which month’s work and on what date.

Understand the FTO Stage — Where the Money Is Stuck

Each month’s entry in the payment record carries a status:

Stage Meaning What to do
Signed FTO The panchayat has created the payment file; the second signature is pending Inform the panchayat secretary
First Signatory The first officer has signed; the second signature is pending Follow up at the block office
Processed by NABL / Bank It has gone to the bank and is being processed on PFMS Wait 2-3 days
Rejected / Rejected by Bank Problem with the account or Aadhaar link Go to the bank and activate NPCI mapping and DBT

⚠️ Remember: The money comes directly to the bank account (DBT) — not through any intermediary’s hands. Never pay any “agent commission,” and don’t hesitate to complain (see the rights section below).

Applying for a New Job Card — Completely Free

Who Can Apply?

  • The applicant must be an adult (18+) member of a rural household.
  • Must be willing to do unskilled wage work — no educational or technical qualification is required.
  • All adult members of a household can be listed on the same job card.
  • Even if you live in rented accommodation, you can apply in the panchayat of the village where you reside.

Application Steps

  1. Go to your gram panchayat office — the application form is completely free.
  2. Fill in family members’ names, ages, Aadhaar numbers and bank account details accurately. Match the name spelling exactly with Aadhaar.
  3. Submit along with: Aadhaar card, passport-size photographs, copy of the bank passbook (ration card too, if available).
  4. After submission, get a receipt/entry acknowledgement and keep it safe.
  5. By rule, the job card should be issued within 15 days — if you still don’t get it, complain at the block office (BDO).

⚠️ Caution: Do not pay anyone a single rupee claiming they are “needed” to make the job card. Don’t fall into the trap of agents, proxies or online “form-filling services” — the entire process is free and happens only at the panchayat office.

Lost Job Card, Wrong Spelling, or Name Dropped?

  • Job card lost: Take the Aadhaar card and a photograph to the panchayat and apply for a duplicate card — issued free.
  • Error in name/age: Submit a written correction application with a copy of the Aadhaar. Verify that the corrected name shows up in the list (R1 report).
  • Adding a new member / transferring name after marriage: Fill out the form at the panchayat to add or transfer the name on the new job card.
  • Rules for removing a name: Before a member’s name can be removed from a job card, the panchayat must give a written notice and an opportunity to be heard — no one can remove a name “over one phone call.” If that happens, complain to the block office.

Delayed or Stuck Wages — Your Rights and the Complaint Route

Under the new law too, workers’ core rights are intact:

  • Wages in 15 days: The right to receive wages in the bank within 15 days of completing work. If delayed, there is also a right to delay compensation.
  • Work in 15 days: If work is not provided within 15 days of applying, the right to an unemployment allowance (at least a quarter of the daily wage rate).
  • 125-day guarantee: For every household, per year.
  • 5 km rule: Work within 5 km of home; beyond that, an extra 10% allowance.
  • Worksite facilities: Shade, drinking water, first aid and childcare at the worksite are mandatory.

How to Complain

  1. Online: File a complaint with your job card number in the Grievance Redressal section of nrega.nic.in.
  2. Written: Keep a copy of the complaint at the gram panchayat and block office (BDO) — get a receipt.
  3. Helpline: Call the toll-free number 1800-111-555.
  4. If there is no resolution even after complaining, send a written complaint to the District Programme Coordinator (DPC) of the zilla parishad.

Worksite Attendance and the NMMS App

Attendance on workdays is recorded at the worksite twice, with photographs, through the NMMS (National Mobile Monitoring System) app. Remember:

  • If attendance isn’t captured in the app, that day’s wage may face processing problems — after work, check that your attendance is properly reflected in the muster roll.
  • Muster rolls and monthly attendance reports are available on nrega.nic.in panchayat-wise — it’s best to cross-check your own days.

Questions People Ask About This Scheme

Are NREGA and MGNREGA the same? What is the new name now?

The 2005 law was called NREGA; in 2009 it became MGNREGA after Mahatma Gandhi. The VB-G RAM G Act, 2025 (Viksit Bharat Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission Gramin), passed by Parliament in 2025, has replaced that law — but job card, name check and payment tracking continue on the same nrega.nic.in portal as before.

What is the NREGA / VB-G RAM G wage in West Bengal now?

In FY 2026-27 the notified daily wage in West Bengal is ₹300 (the previous year it was ₹260). Wage rates are revised every April — check the latest rate in the 'Wage Rates' section of nrega.nic.in.

What information do I need to check my name on the job card list?

No login or personal details are needed. nrega.nic.in → Reports → State → West Bengal → Proceed → R1. Job Card/Employment Register → district → block → panchayat, and the entire list opens. Search by name or job card number.

What should I do if wages don't arrive within 15 days?

If wages are not received within 15 days of completing work, you are entitled to delay compensation. First check the FTO stage on nrega.nic.in, then lodge a written complaint with the gram panchayat and block office, or file a complaint online in the portal's Grievance section.

Do I have to pay anyone to apply for a job card?

No. Job card application, issue and duplicate cards — all are completely free. Do not pay an agent or middleman a single rupee. Just go to the gram panchayat office to get the form.

What if the job card is lost or the name is wrong?

Go to the gram panchayat office with the Aadhaar card and a photograph and apply for a duplicate job card or name correction — both are free. Remember, before anyone's name is wrongly removed from a job card, a hearing notice to the husband/wife is mandatory.

How many days of work per year is guaranteed?

Under the VB-G RAM G Act, 2025 the guarantee has increased from 100 to 125 days (per household, per year). The right to an unemployment allowance also remains if work is not provided within 15 days.

How far from home can the work site be?

The work site should be within 5 km of home. If you must work farther than 5 km, you are entitled to an extra 10% food/travel allowance on top of the wage.
