Important Notice & Official Warning

Don't, out of frustration over a rejection, pay an agent for a 'fast track' — in almost every case you can fix the problem yourself: matching Aadhaar-ration names, completing e-KYC, or filing a written complaint at the Food Office.

Step-by-Step Walkthrough

Application & Verification Process

5 Steps
01

Find out the cause

Open the status on food.wb.gov.in using the ration card number — take a screenshot of what each member's entry shows.

02

Complete e-KYC

First get e-KYC done for members whose verification is pending — this is the single most common blocker.

03

Match the names

Check whether the name and address on Aadhaar, voter card and ration card match exactly; if not, file a correction application.

04

Correction/review application

A written application at the Food Office — with the receipt number, a description of the problem and photos of the documents.

05

File a complaint

If there is no response within 15–30 days, complain on the helpline 18003455505 and on the department's grievance portal.

My name is not on the ration card at all — what should I do?

First check which category the card is in on the digital register. Submit a member-addition application for the family's card at the Food Office (with Aadhaar and birth/marriage proof). If the entire family has been left out, you will need to apply for a new ration card — bringing the status screenshot makes it quickly clear which one is needed.

The application shows 'Pending' month after month — where is it stuck?

It usually gets stuck at three points: a member's e-KYC is pending, the Aadhaar-ration name/date of birth doesn't match, or the local verification report hasn't come. Ask on the helpline using the acknowledgement number — just hearing 'pending' isn't enough; you need to know which step it is stuck at.

My name was on my father's ration card and now I want a separate card — how after marriage?

Apply at the Food Office for a new card in your own name and request removal of your name from the old card — with the marriage certificate. If the same person's name appears on two ration cards, both are put at risk during verification.

Background

In detail

3 min read

Months have passed since you submitted your ration card application, the status still says “Pending”, or the list is out but your name simply isn’t on it — this guide is for everyone stuck in that situation. Good news: behind most rejections/delays lie 4–5 familiar causes, and each has a clear solution.

The 5 major causes of rejection/delay and their solutions

1. e-KYC incomplete (the most common)

If even one family member’s e-KYC is pending, the entire file stands still. Solution: Follow the Ration e-KYC guide and finish it from your mobile — if done offline, complete biometric verification at the Food Office.

2. Name/date of birth doesn’t match between Aadhaar and ration card

Aadhaar has “Md.” but the ration card doesn’t; the address spelling differs; the date of birth differs — when the system can’t match, it flags the application. Solution: Get the ration card details corrected to match Aadhaar (correction via Form 8). If the major error is in Aadhaar itself, fix that first at an Aadhaar Seva Kendra.

3. Doubt in residence verification

The local verification didn’t match the address, or showed a different family size — the application is returned. Solution: Gather residential proof such as a voter card/electricity bill/tax receipt (dakhila) and file a review application at the Food Office.

4. The same person’s name on two records

After marriage, if the name stayed on the in-laws’ card, the new application falls under suspicion. Solution: Submit two applications together — removal of the name from the old card + application for the new card — as a mutation-style member transfer.

5. Category eligibility didn’t match

You applied under PHH/Antyodaya but the income check kept you in RKSY. Solution: Ask for the reason for the refusal (in a written application) and reapply with fresh proof — the procedure is in the category change guide.

How to complain at the Food Office

A verbal complaint leaves no record — make it in writing:

  1. A one-page application — ration card/acknowledgement number, a one-line description of the problem, and the date
  2. Attach photos of the proof (status screenshot, Aadhaar)
  3. Get a receipt/token from whoever receives it, or date-stamp your own copy
  4. If there’s no response within 15 days: helpline 18003455505 → then the department’s grievance portal / the District Food & Supplies Officer

The status screenshot: your biggest weapon

Whatever the portal shows for your ration card number — category, member list, KYC status, and the reason if rejected — take screenshots of everything. Whoever you speak to at the Food Office or on the helpline will guess at an answer without a screenshot; with one, the problem is identified in a minute.
